Plant A Seed To Read Sandy Point

This morning, November 2, 2017, marked the completion of the first stage of the Sandy Point Plant A Seed to Read project. Heidi Fagerberg introduced the curriculum to the teachers in a workshop leaving them with books and copies of lesson plans and activities to take the books directly into the classrooms. We are looking forward to the feedback from teachers and students on their enjoyment of the books!

OECS/USAID Early Learners Programme Adds CR Books

The OECS/USAID Early Learners’ Programme (ELP) is a reading development programme for young learners administered by the OECS Commission with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The programme includes teacher training and providing educational resources for schools. As a part of this programme, the OECS chose several books for inclusion in the classrooms. Seven of CaribbeanReads’ titles were chosen for the programme, namely, the three Living The Beach Life Series by Heidi Fagerberg, Look! A Moko Jumbie by Opal Palmer Adisa, Seascapes by Carol Ottley-Mitchell, The Angry Sun by Jazey Wallace, and The Crumb Bunch by Heidi Fagerberg.

The Protectors’ Pledge-New Review-Richly Imaginative

The latest review of The Protectors’ Pledge by Danielle Y. C. McClean bills it as a great follow up to the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. New Activity Book Just in Time for Summer

Miss Heidi’s The Crumb Bunch Activity Book hit the online bookstores today.

The book, which includes a variety of colouring pages, word searches, mazes, dot-to-dot’s and more, will keep kids busy for hours. The Crumb Bunch Activity Book is a companion to The Crumb Bunch story and includes drawings by Kitwana Julius.

The Crumb Bunch Activity Book is CaribbeanReads’ second activity book. The first is A Colouring Book Tour of St. Kitts-Nevis by Joan Mallalieu

Burt Award for Caribbean Literature Now Open for Submissions

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Now in its fifth year, the Burt Award for Caribbean Literature recognizes up to three English-language literary works for young adults (aged 12 through 18) written by Caribbean authors.

CaribbeanReads has had the pleasure of publishing two Burt Award winners, 2nd place winner in 2014 Musical Youth by Joanne C. Hillhouse and 3rd place winner in 2016 The Protectors’ Pledge by Danielle Y. C. McClean.

This year, the winning title will be awarded $10,000 CDN, and two finalists will be awarded $2,000 CDN each.

Publishers of winning titles will be awarded a guaranteed purchase of up to 2,500 copies, which will be donated to schools, libraries, and literacy organizations throughout the region. To date, more than 22,000 copies of winning books have made their way into the hands of Caribbean youth.

Published books, previously self-published books, and unpublished manuscripts are eligible for the award. Eligible books and unpublished manuscripts may be submitted to the Bocas Lit Fest by publishers registered and operating in the Caribbean. Unpublished manuscripts or previously self-published books may be submitted by authors directly to the Bocas Lit Fest.

Books published between 1 November 2016 and 31 October 2017 and eligible manuscripts must be received at the office of the Bocas Lit Fest by 31 October 2017.
